About Celosia

Celosia is the boldest texture in the late-summer field, with velvety crested heads, upright feathery plumes, and slender wheat-like spikes that all belong to the same surprising genus. Its colors run hot and saturated, magenta, red, orange, gold, coral, cream, and burgundy, and the crested cockscomb types are so dense and folded that people often mistake them for coral or for something artificial. The name traces to the Greek word for burning, a fitting nod to the flame-like look of the plume forms.

Celosia is not a Michigan native. It is a frost-tender annual from the warm regions of the Old World, part of the amaranth family, and its botanical background explains why it waits for real heat before it takes off. Our member farmers time it to bloom once Michigan summers are fully on, usually by July, and it keeps producing right up until the first hard frost, often into October. A hot, humid Michigan summer is exactly what celosia wants, and that weather gives the biggest, most vivid heads of the whole season.

The velvety crested heads bruise and flatten easily in transit, which is exactly why celosia rewards buying local. Because our collective cuts it fresh by the bucket the same week you pick it up, you get crisp, unblemished heads for your own designs instead of the tired, crushed stems that long-haul shipping tends to produce. Reserve a DIY bucket for your late-summer arranging, request celosia in a mixed bucket, or ask our floral designers to build it into a piece that carries straight through fall.

Forms & Varieties

Celosia sorts into a few distinct forms that barely look like the same plant:

Crested cockscomb (cristata)

The classic celosia, folded into dense, velvety, brain-like crests that hold their shape and color beautifully when dried.

Plume (plumosa)

Upright, feathery flames of tightly packed florets in the most vivid reds, oranges, and golds.

Wheat or spike (spicata)

Slender, wheat-like spikes that read airy and graceful, ideal as a textural accent in mixed buckets.

‘Celway’ series

Long-stemmed spike celosia in soft pinks and creams, bred for cut-flower use and a longtime florist favorite.

Care & Vase Life

  • Vase life is excellent, often 10 to 14 days fresh, and celosia dries well too.
  • Cut when the head is fully formed and firm; immature heads keep growing and can flop.
  • Strip lower leaves, which wilt long before the sturdy flower heads fade.
  • Keep the water clean and change it regularly; celosia’s thick stems can foul water quickly.
  • For drying, hang firm crested or plume heads upside down in a dark, airy space.

When We Have Celosia

Celosia needs real warmth, so it starts once Michigan summer is fully on, around July, and pumps out flowers until the first hard frost, frequently into October. A hot, humid summer produces the biggest, most saturated heads, while a cool spell slows it down and frost ends it outright. It’s all grown by our member farmers, so the color range and forms available shift week to week through the season.

Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Celosia FAQs

What are the different types of celosia?

There are three main forms: spike (slender wheat-like spikes), plume (upright feathery flames), and brain or crested cockscomb (dense velvety folds). Each brings a very different texture, and designers often mix them.

Is celosia good for drying?

Very good, the crested and plume types especially hold their shape and color when dried. Cut firm, mature heads, strip the leaves, and hang them upside down in a dark, airy place for a couple of weeks.

How long does cut celosia last?

It’s one of the longest-lasting cut flowers, often ten days to two weeks in fresh water. Keep the vase clean and change the water regularly, since the thick stems can cloud it.

Can I fill a bucket with celosia?

Yes, celosia is a bucket-base flower, so full DIY buckets are available. Its bold texture makes it a favorite for late-summer and fall arrangements you design yourself.
