About Cosmos

Some flowers command a room; cosmos simply drift through it. Each bloom is a wide, open saucer of petals, from clean whites and blushing pinks to deep magentas, held aloft on stems so thin and wiry they seem to hover. The foliage is feathery and almost ferny, and the whole plant sways at the slightest breeze, lending arrangements that loose, unstudied meadow feeling stiffer flowers can never quite fake. Cosmos read as effortless and a little wild. They are the softness that keeps a bouquet from looking too arranged, all lightness and movement.

Cosmos bipinnatus is a native of Mexico, and its name comes from the Greek word for order and harmony, a nod to the balanced symmetry of its petals. That warm-country heritage explains a lot about how it behaves in the garden: cosmos wants nothing to do with pampering. It thrives in lean, well-drained soil and full sun, and overly rich ground only pushes it to grow tall and floppy with fewer flowers. In a Michigan summer it hits its stride, blooming freely from early summer straight through to the first hard frost, and it happily self-sows, dropping seed to return on its own the next year. For the details on growing it well, the NC State Extension plant guide is a reliable place to start.

Cosmos is a flower that rewards being grown close to home. It is a true cut-and-come-again crop: the more our member farmers cut, the more it blooms, so a single planting keeps producing armloads well into fall. We harvest each stem just as the buds crack open, the stage at which cosmos unfurls most fully in the vase, because its delicate petals bruise and shatter in transit. That fragility is exactly why local wins. The cosmos in a shipped box has already spent its best days in a cooler, while ours travels from field to your hands the same day. Reserve a DIY bucket and request cosmos to arrange yourself, or let our design team weave its airy movement through your wedding and event work.

Forms & Varieties

Cosmos come in far more than the simple single daisy most people picture. From tightly petaled doubles to fluted seashell forms and soft sunset shades, these are the varieties our member farmers grow for the cutting field.

Double Click

The showstopper of the group, Double Click trades the classic single saucer for lush, fully double and semi-double blooms packed with ruffled petals. In whites, pinks, and rose-bicolors, it brings a romantic, almost peony-like weight to bouquets while keeping cosmos’ signature airy stems.

Cupcake

Cupcake earns its name from petals fused into a shallow, ruffled cup rather than a flat disc, giving each bloom a sculpted, papery charm. In soft whites and pinks, it is a favorite for arrangements that want a little architectural detail among the movement.

Apricotta

A rare and coveted shade in the cosmos world, Apricotta blooms in warm apricot, peach, and soft blush tones that shift as the flowers age. It is the variety to reach for when you want cosmos in a sunset palette rather than the usual pinks and whites.

Seashells

Seashells is pure whimsy: each petal rolls into a slender fluted tube, like a tiny shell or trumpet, in a mix of white, pink, and crimson. The rolled petals add fine texture and a playful, cottage-garden feel to any hand-tied bunch.

Care & Vase Life

  • Expect 5 to 7 days; harvest or buy stems when the buds are just cracking open, not fully flat, for the longest vase life.
  • Recut stems on an angle and place them in clean, cool water immediately.
  • Removing spent blooms encourages the side buds on a stem to keep opening.
  • Strip lower foliage and refresh the water every couple of days.
  • Keep out of direct sun and heat, which shortens the life of the delicate petals.

When We Have Cosmos

Cosmos are a true high-summer-into-fall flower in Michigan, blooming from July until the first hard frost, often well into October. They thrive on warmth and actually flower more freely in leaner soil, though a wet, cold stretch can slow them down. Every stem is grown by our member farmers, so the colors and forms available shift with what’s peaking in their fields.

Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Cosmos FAQs

Why do my cosmos wilt so quickly?

Cosmos are delicate and don’t ship well, which is why they’re best bought local. Cutting them just as the buds open and getting them into water fast is the key to a longer display.

How long do cut cosmos last?

Usually 5 to 7 days. Buying stems at the just-opening stage and refreshing the water gets you the most out of each bloom.

When are cosmos in season in Michigan?

From July through October, right up to the first hard frost. They peak in the warmth of late summer and early fall.

Can I buy cosmos by the bucket?

Yes. Cosmos are a bucket-base flower, so you can reserve a full DIY bucket for events or your home, or have our designers build them into custom arrangements.
