Michigan Nigella
Few flowers earn a nickname as fitting as love-in-a-mist: each starry Nigella bloom floats inside a haze of thread-fine foliage, like a bit of blue caught in fog. It brings a soft, romantic looseness to any Michigan summer bouquet.

About Nigella
Few cut flowers do two jobs as gracefully as Nigella. The starry, many-petaled blooms open in sky blue, white, and pale rose, each one nested in a haze of thread-fine foliage that earns the plant its common name, love-in-a-mist. As the flowers fade they swell into striped, balloon-shaped seed pods that designers prize just as much as the blossoms, so a single planting keeps giving well past its first flush.
Nigella is not a Michigan native. It is a cottage-garden annual native to southern Europe, north Africa, and southwest Asia that our member farmers grow from spring sowings across the region. It happens to suit our climate well, since it favors the cool, damp weather of an early Michigan summer and is among the first specialty annuals to flower here, opening in June and carrying on into August before real heat pushes it to set pods and seed.
Because Nigella is fine-stemmed and short-lived once cut, it does not survive a long truck ride the way sturdier flowers can. That is where a local collective earns its keep, since our Michigan farmers cut it the morning you pick up, just down the road, so the stems still have the freshness and easy bend that shipped flowers lose. Reserve a DIY bucket for your own arranging, ask us to tuck Nigella into a mixed bucket, or let our floral designers work it into your wedding or event.

Care & Vase Life
- Expect about 5 to 7 days of vase life; recut stems on an angle and place in clean, cool water right away.
- Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline to keep the vase clear and the water fresh.
- Use flower food, and refresh the water every couple of days since fine-stemmed flowers foul water quickly.
- Keep arrangements out of direct sun and away from ripening fruit, which shortens their life.
- To dry the pods, hang small bunches upside down in a warm, airy spot for a week or two.
When We Have Nigella
Nigella is one of the first specialty annuals to arrive in a Michigan summer, opening in June and flowering into August before the heat pushes it to set seed. A cool, damp early summer stretches the flowering window, while a hot spell hurries it toward pods. Every stem is grown by our member farmers across the region, so availability shifts a little week to week with their fields and the weather.
Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Request floral designNigella FAQs
Is Nigella the same as love-in-a-mist?
Yes. Love-in-a-mist is the common name for Nigella damascena, earned by the misty collar of thread-like foliage that surrounds each bloom.
Can I use the seed pods in arrangements?
Absolutely. The striped, balloon-shaped pods are a favorite for both fresh designs and drying, and they often outlast the flowers themselves.
How long will cut Nigella last?
Fresh flowers typically hold 5 to 7 days with clean water and flower food; the pods last far longer and can be dried indefinitely.
Is Nigella a good wedding flower?
It is a wedding designer’s secret weapon for adding softness and movement, though its short vase life means it is best cut close to the event date.
