About Penstemon

Penstemon, commonly called beardtongue, is a graceful spike-maker for the early-summer bouquet. Its upright stems are lined with slender, tubular bell-shaped flowers, foxglove-like in feel, in cool purples and violets, soft pinks, coral, and white, often with pale streaked throats. The overall effect is airy and elegant, a vertical line with a wildflower charm that draws the eye up through an arrangement.

The genus Penstemon is largely North American, and our growers raise the taller garden and native selections, including the reliable foxglove beardtongue, rather than gathering them wild. They are well suited to Michigan: hardy, sun-loving perennials, they return each year and come into bloom in the transition from spring to early summer.

For our farmers penstemon is a lovely, slightly wild vertical stem. It brings foxglove-like grace on a sturdier, more manageable plant, and it mixes beautifully into cottage and naturalistic bouquets.

Care & Vase Life

  • Expect 5 to 8 days; recut and place in fresh, deep water right away.
  • Harvest or buy when the lowest bells on the spike have opened.
  • Strip lower leaves below the waterline.
  • Change the water every few days and keep out of direct heat.
  • Handle the spikes gently to keep the bells intact.

Penstemon FAQs

Why is penstemon called beardtongue?

Because one of the flower stamens is tufted with fine hairs, like a little bearded tongue in the throat of each tubular bell. It is a distinctive family trait.

How is penstemon different from foxglove?

They share that tall, tubular-belled look, but penstemon is generally sturdier and smaller-flowered, and many types are hardy perennials that return each year. We grow it for a similar vertical grace on a more manageable stem.

How long does cut penstemon last?

Around 5 to 8 days in fresh water, opening more bells up the spike as it goes.

Is penstemon good for a DIY bucket?

Yes. Its graceful spikes add vertical line and a wildflower feel to an early-summer DIY bucket.
