About Tulips

Tulips are the quintessential spring flower — smooth cupped petals on clean, gently curving stems. What surprises people is that tulips keep growing in the vase, bending toward the light and stretching an inch or more after they’re cut, a living quality that makes them endlessly charming.

No state leans into tulips like Michigan. Since 1929, the west-Michigan town of Holland has thrown Tulip Time — the longest-running tulip festival in the country — planting millions of bulbs that line the streets each May and drawing close to half a million visitors to celebrate the area’s deep Dutch roots. That heritage is more than a parade: our cool, even springs are exactly the weather tulips want, which is why they grow so beautifully here. If you want the full spectacle, it’s worth timing a visit to Holland’s Tulip Time.

Because our member farmers grow and cut tulips locally, you skip the long cold-storage shipping that leaves grocery-store tulips floppy. Ours are cut in tight, colored bud and keep opening — and moving — right on your table.

Forms & Varieties

Tulips come in a remarkable range of petal shapes. A few forms our farmers grow:

Double Tulip, Michigan Flower Barn

Double

Many-petaled, peony-like blooms with lush, ruffled fullness, like the deep-plum ‘Negrita’.

Parrot Tulip, Michigan Flower Barn

Parrot

Ruffled, feathered, and flamed with color for a dramatic, almost tropical look.

Single

The classic clean-cupped bloom — crisp, timeless, and the longest-lasting in the vase.

Fringed & lily-flowered

Crystal-fringed petal edges, or tall elegant blooms with pointed, reflexing petals.

Care & Vase Life

  • Expect 5 to 7 days of vase life; buy or cut them in tight, colored bud for the fullest show.
  • Wrap the top of a fresh bunch snugly in paper and give them a deep drink for an hour to keep stems straight.
  • Recut stems and use cool, shallow water, tulips drink heavily, so check the level daily.
  • Expect stems to keep growing and to bend toward the light; rotate the vase for even, upright blooms.
  • Keep them cool and away from daffodils unless the daffodils have been conditioned separately first.

When We Have Tulips

Tulips are among our signature spring crops, typically available from mid-April through mid-May in Michigan. A cool, steady spring gives a long tulip season, while a sudden warm spell can rush the whole crop at once. Every stem is grown by our member farmers, so the color range and timing shift a little each year with the weather.

Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Tulip FAQs

Why do my tulips droop and keep growing?

It’s completely normal, tulips continue to grow and bend toward light after cutting. Wrapping them in paper for a deep drink and using cool water helps them stay upright longer.

How long do cut tulips last?

Fresh, locally cut tulips generally last 5 to 7 days. Buying them in tight bud and keeping the water topped up gives you the longest display.

Can I buy a whole bucket of tulips?

Tulips are a specialty flower here, so rather than a stand-alone bucket you can add them as a premium selection inside a DIY bucket for your event or home.

When are Michigan tulips in season?

Our locally grown tulips run from mid-April through mid-May, with the exact timing depending on how quickly the Michigan spring warms up.
