Michigan Ageratums
Few flowers deliver true, saturated blue quite like ageratum, whose fuzzy little clusters float through a bouquet like puffs of cool summer sky.

About Ageratums
Ageratum is the rare cut flower that delivers a genuine, unforced blue. Its blooms open in soft, fuzzy clusters of tiny florets, giving each stem a hazy, cloudlike texture that reads instantly as true blue rather than the lavender or purple that so many “blue” flowers settle for. In an arrangement it works as a gifted filler and softener, tucking between larger focal blooms to knit a bouquet together, cooling down hot summer palettes, and adding a quiet, powdery contrast that makes warmer colors sing. Cutting varieties also come in clean white and gentle pink, but it is the blue that keeps designers reaching for it.
Native to Mexico and Central America, Ageratum houstonianum is a tender, heat-loving annual, which suits the rhythm of a Michigan growing season well. Our member farmers start seed early under cover and set plants out only after the last spring frost has passed, once the soil has warmed and nights are reliably mild. From there it thrives through the long, bright days of a Michigan summer and keeps producing flushes of fresh flower clusters right into the cooler weeks of fall, giving us a dependable supply of that hard-to-find blue across the whole cutting season. It is one of many blooms tended by Michigan’s specialty cut flower community.
Because Ageratum is cut fresh from local fields rather than shipped in from far away, it reaches you with the stems firm and the clusters still tight and vibrant, which is exactly when this flower looks and lasts best. That freshness is the whole point of our DIY buckets: reserve a bucket, request Ageratum along with the other blooms you love, and build your own arrangements at home with flowers picked just down the road. Or leave it to our design team, who reach for its true blue when a wedding or event palette needs that cool, unexpected note woven through.

Forms & Varieties
A few Ageratum types earn their place in the cutting patch, chosen for long stems and lasting color rather than the short mounding kinds sold as bedding plants.
‘Blue Horizon’
The workhorse cutting variety. Unlike compact bedding ageratums, it sends up tall, sturdy stems topped with dense clusters of that signature powder-blue, making it the go-to for bouquets and design work.
‘Timeless Mix’
A cutting blend that spans the softer end of the range, from blue to lavender-blue and rosy tones, giving a bouquet gentle variation within a single, cohesive harvest.
White and pink forms
Beyond the blue, Ageratum offers clean white and soft pink clusters that carry the same fuzzy texture, useful for cooling a bright palette or softening a romantic one.
Care & Vase Life
- Ageratum holds 7 to 10 days in the vase; recut stems and strip the lower leaves before arranging.
- Use clean, cool water and refresh it every couple of days to keep the fuzzy heads crisp.
- Harvest and display when clusters are mostly open, since tight buds may not finish opening off the plant.
- Keep out of hot, direct sun to slow wilting of the delicate flower heads.
- Remove any browning clusters promptly so they do not drag down the fresher blooms.
When We Have Ageratums
Ageratum comes on in the warmth of high summer, typically ready from July and running through September until the first frost ends it. It loves heat and steady moisture, so a hot Michigan July can bring an early flush, while a cool, wet spell may slow the clusters down. Every stem is grown by our member farmers and cut fresh for pickup at the barn.
Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Is ageratum really blue?
Yes, and it is one of the few cut flowers that offers a genuine cool blue rather than a purple standing in for it. That true blue is a big part of why designers reach for it.
What is ageratum used for in arrangements?
It works best as a filler and textural accent, softening bold focal flowers and adding a hazy, cloud-like quality. The short-stemmed clusters are also lovely in boutonnieres.
How long does cut ageratum last?
Expect 7 to 10 days with fresh water and a clean recut. Harvest when the clusters are mostly open for the best vase life.
Can I buy ageratum by the bucket?
Yes. Ageratum is a bucket-base flower, so you can reserve a DIY bucket to arrange yourself or have our designers work it into a custom piece.
