About Jewels of Opar
Jewels of Opar is an airy, branching filler grown for its scatter of tiny pink flowers that ripen into glossy, coppery seed pods held on wiry, almost invisible stems. In a bouquet it does the quiet connecting work, threading movement and a loose, just-gathered lightness between bolder blooms, the kind of effortless sparkle designers prize. Its bright chartreuse foliage adds a fresh green glow at the base of an arrangement.
Despite the storybook name, this is a genuine botanical species, Talinum paniculatum, a heat-loving plant native to the warm southern United States and much of Latin America and the Caribbean, with a long history as an edible salad green, as noted on its Wikipedia entry. It is not a Michigan native, so rather than overwintering here it is grown as a summer annual by our member farmers, only hitting its full, pod-heavy stride once the July heat settles in. That warmth is exactly what pushes it to branch and bead the way florists want.
Jewels of Opar is a poor traveler; the fine stems and delicate pods bruise and shatter over long hauls, which is why you rarely find it in good shape at a supermarket. Because it comes from our collective, member farmers cut it the same morning and it reaches the barn while still crisp, so it actually holds its airy shape in the vase. Reserve a DIY bucket for a wedding or event, add it to a mixed bucket, or ask our floral designers to weave it into an arrangement.

Flowering stems
Cut early, dotted with open pink micro-blooms for the softest, most delicate look.
Green-pod stems
Mid-stage stems whose fresh jade beads read cool and dewy in a bouquet.
Bronze-pod stems
Later cuts where the pods have ripened to glowing copper, ideal for warm-toned designs.
Variegated ‘Kingwood Gold’
A golden-leaved strain of the same plant that adds extra chartreuse glow to the foliage.
Care & Vase Life
- Expect 5 to 8 days; recut stems and place in clean water right away, as it dislikes going dry.
- Strip lower foliage to keep water clean and prevent quick clouding.
- Handle gently, the fine pods can shatter if the stems are jostled or over-packed.
- Keep it cool and hydrated; wilted stems rarely fully revive.
- Later bronze-pod stems can be air-dried for lasting texture in dried designs.
When We Have Jewels of Opar
Jewels of Opar is a true heat-lover, so it shows up once Michigan summer is fully warm, generally July through September, and keeps branching until frost. Warm, sunny weeks bring the most pods and the fullest sprays, while a cool patch can slow it right down. Every airy stem is grown by our member farmers, so how flowery or pod-heavy the cut runs depends on each grower’s timing and the week’s weather.
Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

What exactly is Jewels of Opar used for?
It’s an airy filler. Those wiry stems and tiny pods weave between focal flowers to add movement, lightness, and that loose, just-gathered garden look designers love.
Are the little jewels flowers or pods?
Both, over time. Stems start with tiny pink flowers that mature into glossy green and then coppery-bronze seed pods, the "jewels" that give the plant its name.
How long does it last in a vase?
Around five to eight days when kept in clean water and handled gently, since the fine pods can shatter if the stems are knocked around.
Can I buy Jewels of Opar by the bucket?
Yes, it’s a bucket-base filler, so you can reserve DIY buckets ahead for weddings and events, or add it to a designer arrangement.
