Michigan Lisianthus
People swear they’re roses, or maybe peonies, then they touch a lisianthus and feel that impossibly delicate, tissue-paper petal, and realize they’re looking at one of the most refined flowers a farmer can grow.

About Lisianthus
Lisianthus opens in ruffled, rose-like blooms across the softest palette in the summer garden, whites and creams, blush and pink, lavender and deep purple, often with several buds branching off one graceful stem. The double forms are so full and layered that people mistake them for peonies or garden roses, right up until they touch a petal and feel that impossibly thin, tissue-paper texture. It carries the elegance of a rose with a lighter, more ethereal feel, which is why it has become a wedding-day staple and one of the most coveted cut flowers of the season.
Lisianthus is not a Michigan native. It is a prairie gentian in the gentian family, native to the warm grasslands of the southern United States and Mexico, as described on its Wikipedia page. Because it is a slow, heat-loving crop that wants a long warm stretch, our Michigan farmers have to coax it patiently through the season, which is why local lisianthus arrives in the heart of summer, roughly July through September, rather than early in the year.
That difficulty is exactly why locally grown lisianthus is worth seeking out. It is a crop only a skilled grower attempts, and because our collective’s member farmers tend it through that long season and cut the stems at their prime, the blooms reach you fresher and more affordable than the air-freighted imports most florists rely on. Reserve lisianthus as a premium add-on to a DIY bucket for your wedding or event, or ask our floral designers to build it into a custom arrangement.

Care & Vase Life
- Expect a generous 10 to 14 days; recut stems and use clean, fresh water.
- Remove spent blooms as they fade so the many buds on each stem keep opening.
- Strip lower leaves and refresh the water every couple of days.
- Keep out of direct sun and heat to extend the bloom’s life.
- Handle the tissue-thin petals gently; they bruise more easily than they look.
When We Have Lisianthus
Because lisianthus needs a long, warm growing stretch, our farmers’ crop comes in during the heart of summer, roughly July through September. It’s worth the wait, a warm season brings the fullest, most branched stems, while a cool summer can delay and shorten the harvest. Every bloom is grown by our member farmers through that demanding season, so colors and doubles available shift week to week by grower.
Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Request floral designLisianthus FAQs
Is lisianthus the same as a rose?
No, though it’s often mistaken for one. Lisianthus is a prairie gentian with ruffled, rose- or peony-like blooms and a lighter, more delicate petal, a distinct flower with its own airy elegance.
How long does lisianthus last in a vase?
It’s one of the longest-lasting cut flowers, often 10 to 14 days. Removing faded blooms lets the remaining buds on each stem keep opening.
Why is local lisianthus a better deal?
Most florist lisianthus is air-freighted from overseas. Because our member farmers grow it right here, you get fresher stems, longer vase life, and better value.
Can I add lisianthus to a DIY bucket?
Yes, as a specialty flower, lisianthus is offered as a premium add-on to your DIY bucket rather than a stand-alone bucket, perfect for weddings and events.
