Michigan Ninebark
When a bouquet needs backbone and a rich, moody color, Ninebark answers. Its arching branches of deep burgundy leaves give arrangements weight and drama that no flower can supply on its own, the dark counterpoint that makes every bloom beside it glow.

About Ninebark
Ninebark is a hardy shrub grown for its cut foliage far more than for its flowers, and the branches designers reach for carry leaves in wine red, plum, and near black. The stems are woody but flexible, arching just enough to give an arrangement structure and weight without stealing the show. Small clusters of white to pink flowers open in early summer, and by late season the branches take on reddish papery seed pods that add one more layer of texture.
Physocarpus opulifolius, the species behind nearly every florist Ninebark, is a genuine Michigan native. The University of Michigan’s Michigan Flora records it growing wild across the state, typically along stream banks, rocky slopes, and woodland edges. That means the dark-leaved garden selections our farmers cut, cultivars like Diabolo and Summer Wine, are refined versions of a shrub already built for Michigan winters and summers, so it settles into local fields with very little fuss.
Woody foliage is heavy and quick to bruise, so branches trucked in from far away often arrive with tired, spotted leaves. Because our member farmers cut and condition their Ninebark right here, it reaches you crisp and pliable, ready to bend into a garland or anchor a moody centerpiece. Reserve a DIY bucket of Ninebark for your own arranging, ask us to tuck it into a mixed bucket, or hand it to our floral designers to build into your wedding or event work.

Flowering and seed-pod stems
Early-summer branches carry white to blush flower clusters, while later stems bring reddish papery pods for extra texture.
Care & Vase Life
- Well-conditioned Ninebark holds 7 to 14 days; give woody stems a fresh angled cut and a deep drink before arranging.
- Strip lower leaves so nothing sits in the water, which keeps the vase clean and the branch hydrated.
- Let stems rest in cool, deep water for several hours before designing so the foliage firms up.
- Keep out of hot direct sun; heat can cause the tender leaf tips to wilt first.
- Refresh water every few days, and recut the stem base if the branch starts to droop.
When We Have Ninebark
Ninebark cuts well from June, when the burgundy foliage has firmed up, through September as the leaves take on even richer fall tones. Early-summer stems often carry flowers, while late-season branches bring pods and deeper color. A cool, wet summer keeps the leaves lush; drought stress can crisp the edges. Every branch is grown by our member farmers on shrubs rooted right here in Michigan.
Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Is Ninebark a flower or foliage?
It is grown mainly as cut foliage. The burgundy leaves are the draw, though early-summer stems can carry small white-pink flower clusters and later stems bear reddish pods.
Why is it called Ninebark?
The name comes from the shrub’s bark, which peels away in many thin papery layers, giving the impression of nine distinct sheets.
How long does cut Ninebark last?
Well-conditioned stems commonly hold 7 to 14 days, making it one of the longer-lasting foliages in a summer arrangement.
What arrangements is Ninebark best for?
Its dark leaves and sturdy branches make it ideal as a foliage base, for large installations, and for moody or fall-toned designs.
