About Bupleurum
Bupleurum is that rare stem that behaves like foliage and flower at once, sending up branching sprays of rounded, eucalyptus-like leaves topped with airy umbels of chartreuse. The color is a clean, citrusy yellow-green that no plain leafy green quite matches, and the fine, see-through texture lets it drift between show flowers like a soft haze rather than a solid block. A few stems worked through a bouquet add both structure and a fresh pop of lime that flatters warm and cool palettes alike.
Botanically it sits in the carrot family, which is why its tiny blooms gather into the lacy, umbrella-shaped clusters called umbels. That family trait is more than pretty: the shallow, clustered flowers of the carrot family are well suited to ladybugs, parasitic wasps, and predatory flies, along with a wide range of small pollinators. Bupleurum is not a Michigan native, though. The common cut-flower species traces back to the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia, so rather than claim it as wild here, we grow it as a cool-season summer crop in our member farmers’ fields, where the plants scatter their green umbels for beneficial insects to work. You can read more about the species at the Wikipedia entry for Bupleurum rotundifolium.
Getting bupleurum from our collective keeps that delicate airiness intact. Cut fresh by a member farmer nearby and moved quickly to the barn, the fine stems arrive perky and vivid instead of collapsing the way trucked-in filler often does, which is the whole difference between bright greenery and a tired green. Reserve a DIY bucket and ask for bupleurum as your airy lime filler, request it in a mixed bucket, or let our floral designers weave it through custom bouquets and event work where that chartreuse haze ties every color together.

Forms & Varieties
Bupleurum comes from just a small handful of types, all prized for that signature lime haze.
‘Griffithii’
The standard cut-flower selection our member farmers rely on, with blue-green foliage and bright chartreuse umbels on well-branched stems.
‘Green Gold’
A selection grown for sturdier stems and a slightly more golden-green cast, handy when you want the filler to hold its own beside bold focal flowers.
Fresh market bunches
Bundled branching stems cut at their prime, ideal for filling out DIY buckets and adding volume to hand-tied bouquets.
Airy tips
The finer upper stems, used for a delicate, see-through veil of lime green around focal flowers in bouquets and centerpieces.
Care & Vase Life
- Expect 7 to 10 days; recut the stems on an angle and condition in cool, clean water before arranging.
- Give it a few hours of deep water first, as the fine stems drink readily and revive quickly.
- Strip lower foliage that would sit underwater to keep the vase clear.
- Keep out of direct sun and hot drafts to preserve the bright green color.
- Refresh the water every couple of days to hold the delicate umbels crisp.
When We Have Bupleurum
Bupleurum is an early-to-mid summer crop in Michigan, running from June into August. It prefers cooler conditions and can bolt or fade fast in extreme heat, so mild stretches give us the longest, most branched stems. Every bunch is grown by our member farmers, and availability follows what’s flourishing across their fields week to week.
Availability shifts week to week with the Michigan season, so colors and varieties vary. Reserve ahead for events, and check the shop for what our farmers have cut this week.

Is bupleurum a flower or a green?
A bit of both. It’s grown as a filler, but its chartreuse umbels give it more color and texture than a plain leafy green, which is why designers prize it.
How do you pronounce bupleurum?
Most growers say boo-PLOOR-um. Whatever you call it, ask for the airy lime-green filler and we’ll know exactly what you mean.
How long does bupleurum last in a vase?
Around 7 to 10 days when conditioned in fresh water, making it one of the longer-lasting fillers we offer.
Can I buy bupleurum by the bucket?
Yes. It’s a bucket-base green, so you can reserve a full DIY bucket to build your own arrangements, or have our designers weave it through custom work.
